Our sanctuary
In the last 20 months, we have dedicated ourselves to creating a sanctuary for us and our little ones. We didn’t know when we started that it would be such an amazing journey. ❤
We wanted to create beautiful memories for our children in our own garden. A place for us to rest, to play, to learn, to laugh and to cry. And, unsurprisingly, our best weekends and holidays were spent right here. Be it just laying the pebbles, sowing seeds, building garden beds, picking vegetables, planting a tree, digging out some worms and bugs, hunting for snails, cooking some dinners on our rocket stove, watching black cockatoos steal our pine nuts, building a cubby house or just watch the little ones run around and wind each other up.
I have never felt more at peace and grounded in my life as I feel now. This space has allowed me to just be…
I’m so proud to say the least that in the short time here, we have totally transformed this space. We planted enough trees, shrubs and herbs here that this garden is now hosting over 100 different plant species. We have witnessed how the garden comes alive with buzzing bees (including natives) and birds including black cockatoos, owls and bats, worms, bugs, hover flies, dragon flies, beetles, lady birds and many more. And in 2019, we were a proud winner of the Sustainability Award from our local council.
When we first arrived, there wasn’t much living critters here. The garden had suffered a lot following a 9-month renovation work done to our dwelling and the ground had become solid, dry and completely lifeless. No bugs, no worms, no bees, just nothing. 4 months into moving in, with a bit of sweat and muscle, we covered the whole area up with wood chips and patiently waited for it to recover.
12 months on, the results are simply astonishing. Can you see the difference? We didn’t have to do any digging. We simply mimicked nature, which is to cover the ground with organic matter. And surely nature knows best. The soil is now full of life, it’s fertile and it is now happily housing over 100 plants and trees… Just amazing. ❤
I look forward to the next 20 years. Hoping very soon, this space will be where most of our food comes from. There is still so much to do and so much to learn. This has become a journey for us and not a destination. And we are savoring each step and every step of the way.
What about you. What is your sanctuary? ❤
