Living free

We just had two very big Saturdays.
Two Saturdays ago, we sold our house, not the one we are currently living in, the one we used to live in.
Just last Saturday, we bought a new house, by the sea!
I told David this is his birthday present. He didn’t buy it. He demanded another present. 😂 It was his birthday on Saturday. I don’t blame him.
We have a dream. Our dream is to achieve full financial freedom and live a simple, fulfilling and sustainable life. It is a journey to get there and I think we are on the right path to achieve just that. I’m sure there will be lots of obstacles along the way, but they will just be part and parcel of the journey. 😍
This is our story…
About 2 years ago, our financial situation took an unexpected turn. We were just about to start building an expensive home and David lost his job. I was on maternity leave at the time so was already not earning an income for at least 6 months. And because we were about to start building, the rental income had ceased for several months. We went from having two comfortable salaries plus rental income to very quickly having none and was about to spend a LOT of money on our new house. And I wasn’t ready to return to my corporate job just yet as little one was only 6 months old. I did return to work a few months after that.
Despite that, we pushed on with the build of our dream home. Luckily having sold our previous holiday home, we could fund for it, and had some leftover savings.
But our mortgage was completely off the roof, which we could not support with my single income. It the past 18 months, it was quickly eating into our savings and it has become more and more unsustainable. We have also made a tough decision for David to be home, caring for the children and not go back to full time corporate job. They need at least one of us.
So, we decided to let go of our beloved home of 10 years, in order to get our finances back on track. However, we did not want to lose out on property growth potentials. We decided to continue to invest in the property market, by buying a cheaper property at a place we absolutely love and would happily retire to – by the sea!
With the reduced mortgage, it gives us the much needed financial relief. And our plan is to further reduce the remaining mortgage, to a point when it will become completely self-sustainable.
And this is our plan….
Our new beach house will be rented out as a short term holiday rental. We expect It to yield reasonable income.
Next, we will build a secondary dwelling the rear property, an off- grid sustainable tiny house perhaps. By renting this out, it will further uplift our rental yield.
Together, we expect the rentals will fully cover it’s mortgage, perhaps with some extras.
Our ultimate dream is to achieve full financial and time freedom. We want to travel around Australia in a motorhome with the boys one day for about 6 months once every 3 to 4 years. We want to give them the best experiences in life, and create amazing memories for them.
How do we do that with the remaining mortgage we have?
By taking on the road, allowing us to rent out the current home we live in, it will be completely cover our remaining mortgage! On the side, we will continue to grow our home-based business, which is centered around helping and inspiring others to live a healthy, natural and sustainable lifestyle.
This is our dream, to truly live sustainably. I believe we will get there one day. A bit of patience, a bit of perseverance, a bit of motivation, a bit of planning is all we need.
Sustainability is not just about a passive home with a sustainable garden, it is about our way of life, our health, our financials and our passion, doing what we are truly called to do.
