Why I use the two power herbs Calendula and Chamomile
Many of you would have heard or read about the amazing benefits of calendula and chamomile.
I first decided to use calendula and chamomile oil infusion when my baby at the time suffered from severe eczema and his paediatrician prescribed him steroid cream to be applied 3 times a day. At the time, I already started my journey to a cleaner and healthier living, minimising uses of commercial products with toxic chemicals, especially products applied to the skin.
Skin is our biggest organ. Constituents in skincare, including those found in chemicals and preservatives applied to the skin get absorbed through the skin and end up in our bloodstream. A lot of these chemicals and preservatives are highly toxic and when applied regularly, can result in increased level of toxicity in our body, creating all sorts of health issues.
I was determined not to expose my child to more chemicals, especially that he was already carrying toxic load in his body (due to his severe constipation, mostly likely resulted from his lack of beneficial gut bacteria following antibiotic exposure at birth). This was apparent from his eczema breakout, which is one of the ways our body try to release toxins when other organs have failed to do so efficiently.
So I started looking into natural and organic skincare products in the market specifically for eczema. Disappointingly, I couldn’t find a product that does not have any preservatives. I ended up buying a popular natural brand (I won’t name it here to respect their brand) but found the product to be not very easily absorbable (probably due to the high aqua aka water content) and the white cream was swimming on my baby’s skin despite trying to rub it in over several minutes. After many applications, I didn’t see any improvement in the skin either.
The disappointing outcome resulted in me deciding to make my own cream for my baby’s eczema using the tallow based cream I already made. I did a lot of reading and research and found calendula and chamomile to have the most amazing properties when it comes to dry, irritated and highly sensitive skin conditions. Studies have found these two power herbs combined to have beneficial properties below;
- Anti-inflammatory (highly beneficial for dry or sensitive skin)
- anti-fungal
- anti-viral
- anti-bacterial (promotes the fast healing and regeneration of the skin, great for minor cuts and wounds and fungal infections)
- packed full of antioxidants (eliminate free radicals and prevent the development of oxidative stress)
The antioxidants are in the form of carotenoids and flavonoids which the body readily absorbs and converts into vitamin A. Carotenoids naturally exist in the outer layer of skin, so calendula-rich formulas, could help brighten the skin’s appearance. It’s also very rich in tocopherols, or vitamin E, another antioxidant with amazing skin softening abilities.
The conclusion for my research was that calendula and chamomile oils are not only highly effective for highly sensitive and irritated skin conditions but also have excellent anti-aging properties due to the high levels of antioxidants that are in their natural forms, therefore easily absorbed by the skin. So effectively, these two power herb infusions are fantastic for both young and old alike.
I have since further improved my tallow cream by adding this beautiful infusion of calendula and chamomile. I have never looked back. My baby’s skin was noticeably improved, moisturised, less inflamed and less irritated.
The eczema completely went away in the end. I don’t claim that it was due to the cream as true healing comes from healing of the gut and removal of toxins in the body, but I can definitely say that my homemade tallow cream with calendula and chamomile infusion brought great relief at the time we needed it most.
As for myself, given the amazing anti-aging and hypoallergenic properties of calendula and chamomile, I have decided to add these infusions permanently to my tallow cream, which I use for all parts of my body, replacing all my other skincare products; eye cream, face cream, body cream, hand cream, heel balm, nappy cream, eczema cream and make-up remover. This is the same cream I am offering to the market today, the Ultra-moisture All-in-One Face and Body cream.
