Zacoli Organic – Sustainable Open House day

On Sunday, Sustainable Open House day, we opened up our home to 150 visitors. We shared with them our passion for organic and sustainable living.

We took them for a walk through our edible garden, we spoke about our simple #nodiggarden using the #backtoeden approach, which is to use tree mulch (leaves and bark) to build up the soil and to enrich it. And with that simple method, we can have an instant garden bed.

We showed them our 3 recycled bathtubs which have been converted to instant garden beds, one of which is our edible water garden. Also discussed how we diverted our bath water into our garden so we can have guilt-free bath. As we do not use any chemicals in our bath, mainly just epsom salt and bentonite clay which are high in beneficial trace minerals and greatly benefit the soil, we could safely transport the bathwater directly to our plants and fruit trees.

Inside our home, we walked through the concrete floor, we discussed the concrete slab being excellent thermal mass as well as a grounding / earthing material. So when we walk barefoot inside, we get the benefits of the earth and get truly grounded to the earth.

We also shared with our visitors our fermentation butler’s pantry, with kombucha, milk kefir and sauerkraut actively fermenting. Our activated almonds were also in the dehydration process.

Then we took our visitors upstairs and shared with them our beautiful bathrooms, one of which has been converted to an infrared sauna room for detoxing.

We spoke about our huge west facing windows in the master bedroom, whilst may not sound very sustainable as they bring in too much sunlight in summer, they do come with benefits. The main benefit is to be able to watch sunset, and watching sunset with no glasses / glazing is highly beneficial to our eyes and also help greatly with vitamin D absorption.

We finished off the tour with a display of our organic, natural and toxin free products. Many have taken great interest.

For us sustainability is more than just an energy efficient home. To us, sustainability is a way of life, a way of life that focuses on reducing our carbon footprint, going back to the basics, connect ourselves back to the earth and mother nature and eating and living the way human beings are meant to.

In return, we are happier, healthier and wealthier. ❤
